Higher Education: Mental Health and Performance with Impact Study: THRIVE TO PERFORM - PERFORM TO THRIVE
A unique leadership and well-being development programme inspired by positive psychology, focusing on the essentials
of life and leadership, for emerging, established and senior leaders.
If I were to ask you what you truly want, you might respond that you want to succeed in life, in your studies and at
work. If I then ask you, succeed how, you might struggle to give a clear answer.
We all want to succeed, but we may not have defined what that success looks like. We all want to be happy, yet we
often find it difficult to describe what happiness means. One of the reasons is that we haven't been educated about
the power of our minds, and we haven't been trained to manage ourselves holistically.
Self-awareness + Self-management + Social awareness + Social influence (Goleman 2007)
= Thriving individuals and exceptional performance.
This unique mental fitness programme aims to enhance your self-awareness and self-management so that you adopt
new habits for life. Inspired by Seligman's PERMAV model (Seligman 2011), Goleman's theory on the
benefits of greater emotional intelligence (Goleman 2007) and Luthans' concept of PsyCap (HERO) (Luthans 2012), it
invites you to explore ways to cultivate your mental well-being and achieve optimal functioning at work and in life.
At the same time, we work with scientifically validated coaching and leadership development models such as GROW,
DiSC, situational leadership, limiting beliefs and ABCDEF, to name but a few.
Learning objectives:
- Identify my preferred behaviours and distinguish between innate and learned aspects of my leadership style.
- Establish a personal mental fitness routine for life and overcome some of my limiting beliefs.
- Integrate the importance of physical activity and health.
- Identify my key survival mechanisms and develop my resilience.
- Draft my personal mission statement and leadership development plan (3 to 5 years).
Expected outcomes:
The 14 Fundamentals of Happiness according to Fordyce
In addition to the findings on which this programme is based, the effectiveness of positive psychology interventions has also been
demonstrated by Michael Fordyce (1977, 1983), whose study showed that students taking part in a well-being development
project became happier through the fourteen fundamentals of happiness psychology.
1. Being more active and engaged
2. Spending more time socialising
3. Being productive at work
4. Being more organised and better planned
5. Reducing worries and negative thoughts
6. Having fewer and more realistic expectations
7. Practising positivity through optimistic thinking
and reasoning.
8. Being more focused and fully present
9. Developing and maintaining a healthy personality
10. Becoming more empathetic
11. Being yourself at all times
12. Replacing negative thoughts with positive ones
13. Valuing close relationships
14. Reflecting on how to improve our happiness
