Competency 19 - The Ability to Ask for Help

Transforming Conflict into Growth:

Social Competencies: Solving Various Difficulties

Specific Competency: The Ability to Ask for Help

Statement: Asking for help is a critical skill in navigating life’s challenges. It requires humility, self-awareness, and the understanding that seeking assistance is a sign of strength, not weakness. This competency is essential for solving difficulties effectively and fostering collaborative relationships.

Introduction

As we shift focus to competencies that help us navigate life’s challenges, we begin with the ability to ask for help. This skill is often undervalued, yet it is a cornerstone of resilience and effective problem-solving. Asking for help requires courage and an understanding that we don't have to face every challenge alone. It’s a step towards building stronger, more supportive relationships and achieving success in both personal and professional spheres.

The Importance of Asking for Help

Asking for help is more than just a practical necessity; it's an emotional and social skill that reflects self-awareness and a willingness to collaborate. It breaks down barriers to growth and fosters a culture of mutual support and learning. Research shows that individuals who regularly ask for help are more likely to achieve their goals, build stronger relationships, and experience less stress.

How Previous Competencies Enhance the Ability to Ask for Help

  1. Self-Knowledge (Competency 1): Understanding your own strengths and limitations is crucial for recognising when you need help.
  2. Constructive Decision-Making (Competency 7): Making responsible choices often involves recognising when external input is needed, which means knowing when and how to ask for help.
  3. Understanding Emotions and Stress (Competency 9): Recognising your emotional state and stress levels can alert you to when it's time to seek support.
  4. Expressing Emotions Positively (Competency 11): Effectively communicating your emotional needs is key when asking for help, ensuring that your requests are clear and understood.
  5. Effective Communication (Competency 16): Clear communication is essential when asking for help—knowing how to express your needs effectively ensures you get the support you require.
  6. Prosocial Attitudes and Behaviours (Competency 18): Cultivating a mindset of collaboration and mutual support makes it easier to ask for and offer help within your network.

Part A: Start By Yourself

Objective: Develop the ability to ask for help by recognising when and how to seek support.

Instructions:

A) Reflect on Past Experiences:

  • Identify a Time You Needed Help: Think of a recent situation where you needed help but either hesitated to ask or did ask. What were the outcomes? How did it make you feel?
  • Evaluate Your Approach: Reflect on how you approached the situation. Did you communicate your needs clearly? What could you have done differently?

B) Practice Asking for Help:

  • Identify a Current Challenge: Consider a current challenge you are facing. It could be at work, in your personal life, or even in a project. Identify who could assist you.
  • Reach Out: Take the initiative to ask for help. Be clear about what you need and why you are asking this person specifically. Remember, it’s not a sign of weakness; it’s a step towards solving your difficulty effectively.

C) Alternative Ways to Practice:

  • Seek Feedback: Ask someone you trust for feedback on a project or decision. This can be a gentle way to practice asking for help.
  • Join a Group or Community: Engage in communities or support groups where asking for and offering help is a common practice.

Benefits:

  • Builds resilience and reduces stress.
  • Strengthens relationships through mutual support.
  • Enhances problem-solving skills by leveraging the strengths of others.

Part B: Share with Pairs, Family, or Friends

Objective: Develop the ability to ask for help together by encouraging mutual support within your group.

Instructions:

A) In Pairs or Groups:

  • Share a Challenge: Each person shares a current challenge they are facing. Discuss why asking for help in this situation might be difficult.
  • Role-Playing Exercise: Practice asking for help with your group. One person plays the role of someone needing help, and the others provide support. This helps to build confidence and refine the skill.

B) Create a Supportive Environment:

  • Encourage Open Communication: Foster an environment where asking for help is seen as normal and encouraged. Discuss the benefits of mutual support and how it can strengthen relationships.
  • Celebrate Successes: When someone successfully asks for help and achieves a positive outcome, celebrate it. This reinforces the value of the skill.

C) Reflect Together:

  • Discuss Learnings: Reflect on what was learned from asking for help. How did it feel? What was the response from others? How did it impact the challenge you were facing?
  • Plan for Future Challenges: Make a plan to continue practising this skill in daily life. Set goals for how and when to ask for help in future situations.

Tips:

  • Recognise that asking for help is a strength, not a weakness.
  • Be clear and specific when asking for help to ensure you get the support you need.
  • Foster an environment of mutual support where asking for help is encouraged and celebrated.

Benefits:

  • Encourages collaboration and mutual support.
  • Reduces the stigma around asking for help.
  • Enhances the effectiveness of problem-solving efforts.
